Dry Eye Treatment
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy is an innovative and painless method of reducing dry eye symptoms that relies on pulses of light of various wavelengths to target oil glands in the eyelid as well as inflammatory blood vessels. Generally, this non-invasive treatment is conducted around the eyes from ear to ear but not the eyeball itself. IPL works exceptionally well for people who have evaporative dry eye disease and meibomian gland dysfunction or other eyelid inflammatory conditions such as ocular rosacea and blepharitis, which also contribute to dry eye.
The procedure takes minutes and requires four initial “loading” sessions separated by 2-4 weeks for optimal results. Following this, repeat maintenance procedures are conducted at six-month intervals. During the course of the treatment, patients can continue managing their symptoms with eye drops and other dry eye treatments as directed by their doctor. Though some individuals report quickly improving symptoms, it is generally not until after a few treatments that results are expected to be seen.
The IPL treatment is safe and well tolerated by patients. The eyes are protected with shielded goggles or disposable eye patches. The light pulses may feel like a warm sensation to the skin depending on skin condition and its sensitivity. Patients are recommended to avoid sun exposure and use sunblock when outside for a few weeks before and after the IPL treatment.
