Considering Purchasing Glasses Online?

Posted by ecwadmin on May 22, 2013 in Optical.

Internet sales of prescription glasses capture 2-3% of the national market. Yet a recent study shows that nine out of 10 websites studied did not collect all of the necessary information to dispense accurate spectacles. The researchers surveyed ten online optical businesses. They found that eight of 10 optical shops required Pupillary Distance (PD) measurements while two allowed the buyer to use an average PD. Only one required an actual doctor’s prescription for verification. When the optical shop does not have all the specific information for your eyes, the results can be headaches, pulling sensations of the eyes, incorrect vision through the lenses, etc.

The Eye Clinic of Wisconsin always encourages patients to avoid purchasing their spectacles on the internet. Jennifer Aarrestad, Optical Manager, said, “Patients think that the PD measurement is part of the exam, and it is not. We desire to educate our patients so they can make wise choices.” Whenever a patient comes to the optical department at the Eye Clinic of Wisconsin for a PD measurement, the optical staff shares a copy of the study referenced above and they write their PD on the study.
