Costume Contact Lenses
By Matthew J. Johnson, OD

The Eye Clinic of Wisconsin would like to wish everyone a safe and enjoyable upcoming Halloween! At the same time, we also need to caution folks about the use of decorative contact lenses.

While decorative contacts are fun and can help complete a memorable costume, they are still a medical device regulated by the FDA. This means a proper fitting and valid prescription from an eye care provider is required to purchase these lenses.

Improper wearing or sharing of these lenses can lead to infections, allergic reactions, and corneal abrasions. A corneal infection has the potential to cause scarring, and can lead to a permanent vision defect. Be aware that decorative lenses are often marketed and distributed illegally, so always obtain these, and all contact lenses, from a trusted and reliable source.

Happy Halloween!
