Cindy X. Cai, M.D., M.S.

Dr. Cindy Cai is a board-certified ophthalmologist, fellowship-trained vitreoretinal surgeon, and clinical informaticist specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the retina and vitreous.

Dr. Cai graduated summa cum laude with a major in biology at Columbia University, where she later earned her medical degree from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. She completed her ophthalmology residency at the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins Hospital, followed by fellowship training in vitreoretinal surgery at Duke Eye Center. She also earned a Master of Science in Applied Health Sciences Informatics from Johns Hopkins University.

Prior to joining the Eye Clinic of Wisconsin, Dr. Cai served on the faculty at the Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where she was an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology in the Retina Division. She also held a faculty appointment in Biomedical Informatics and Data Science at Johns Hopkins. Dr. Cai maintains an adjunct faculty appointment at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, reflecting her ongoing commitment to education, research, and advancing retina care.

Dr. Cai’s academic work has focused on diabetic eye disease, access to care, and the use of data and technology to improve patient outcomes. She has received competitive research funding and philanthropic support, authored numerous peer-reviewed publications in leading ophthalmology journals, and remains actively involved in national professional societies, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Retina Specialists, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, and the Retina Society.

Dr. Cai joined the Eye Clinic of Wisconsin in 2026.
