David G. Carli, D.O.

Dr. Carli grew up in Northeast Wisconsin. For his undergraduate education he attended Michigan Technological University in Houghton, MI where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering. He then received his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Des Moines University in Des Moines, IA in 2019 and then traveled to upstate New York to start his specialty training. He completed both his internship and ophthalmology residency at the State University of New York at Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, NY in 2023. After residency, he completed a fellowship in Cornea, External Disease and Refractive Surgery at Price Vision Group in Indianapolis, IN in 2024.

Dr. Carli is excited to return to Wisconsin to practice. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his family and exploring the great outdoors.

Dr. Carli joined the Eye Clinic of Wisconsin in 2024.

Douglas T. Edwards, M.D.

Dr. Edwards received his Bachelor of Arts at Wartburg College in Waverly, IA in 1995. He earned his M.D. from the University of Iowa Medical School in Iowa City, IA, in 1999 and finished his internship at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, WI, the following year. He completed his Ophthalmology Residency at the Mayo Clinic Department of Ophthalmology in Rochester, MN, 2003.

In addition to scoring in the top 3% on his board exams, Dr. Edwards has performed thousands of eye surgeries and has certifications with the VISX laser, Intralase, and custom LASIK procedure, as well as being Board Certified and a member of AAO and ISRS. Dr. Edwards joined the clinic in 2003.

Dr. Flatter graduated from the University of California in 2009 with a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry/Molecular Biology. He went on to earn his medical degree in 2015 from the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, and while there served as the Vice President of the American College of Physicians, Student Chapter.

Dr. Flatter completed his internship at the Medical College of Wisconsin affiliated hospital, St. Joseph’s in Milwaukee, and his ophthalmology residency at Penn State Eye Center in Hershey, Pennsylvania. He has served with World Blindness Outreach in the Dominican Republic, providing care for cataract and corneal transplant patients.

Dr. Galang received his Bachelor of Science in pharmacology and toxicology from the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 1990. He earned his Doctorate of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) from the University of Osteopathic Medicine and Health Sciences in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1996, and finished his internship at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, Michigan, the following year. He completed his Ophthalmology Residency at the Detroit Osteopathic Ophthalmology Consortium in Pontiac, Michigan, in 2000.

Dr. Galang has completed two fellowships; one in pediatric ophthalmology at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan in Detroit in 2001, and a second in ocular trauma and reconstructive surgery at the Kresge Eye Institute in Detroit, MI in 2002.

Deepak Sambhara, M.D.

Dr. Sambhara received his Bachelor of Arts at the University of Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia, PA in 2008.  He earned his M.D from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Peoria, IL in 2014 and finished his internship at Banner University Medical Center in Phoenix, AZ the following year.  He completed his Ophthalmology Residency at the Penn State Eye Center in Hershey, PA in 2018.

After residency, Dr. Sambhara spent an additional year of training at Duke Eye Center in Durham, NC, where he completed a fellowship in medical retina and diseases of the vitreous cavity.  There, he was trained in cutting edge angiographic techniques for diagnosing and managing retinal vascular diseases, and was exposed to novel drug design research for Age Related Macular Degeneration.

Dr. Sambhara has received research funding and travel grants to present at many national meetings, including ARVO and ASCRS, and is an active member of AAO and ASRS. Dr. Sambhara joined the clinic in 2019.

Afua A. Shin, M.D.

Dr. Shin received her undergraduate degree in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology from Yale University, New Haven, CT, in 2009. From 2009-2010, she led an independent research project at the Tokyo Ariake University of Medical and Health Sciences in Tokyo, Japan. She earned her medical degree from Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine in St. Louis, MO, in 2014.

The following year, Dr. Shin finished her internship at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, IL, and went on to complete her ophthalmology residency there in 2018.

Dr. Shin completed a fellowship in Cornea and External Diseases at the University of California Davis in July of 2019.

Dr. Shin joined the Eye Clinic of Wisconsin in 2019.

Thomas P. Colvin, O.D.

Dr. Colvin earned his Bachelor of Science in Vision Science degree in 2019 and Doctor of Optometry (O.D.) in 2022 from the Michigan College of Optometry in Big Rapids, MI. Dr. Colvin completed his clinical internships at the Michigan Eye Institute in Flint, Michigan, the Eye Institute of West Florida in Largo, Florida, and the Aleda E. Lutz Veterans Affair in Saginaw, MI.

Prior to joining the Eye Clinic of Wisconsin in 2024, Dr. Colvin practiced comprehensive medical optometry in Southeast Michigan. Dr. Colvin is an avid outdoorsman and considers it an honor to serve patients in our Northwoods location.

Jesse A. Birsching, O.D.

Dr. Birsching received his Bachelor of Science in Vision Science in 2018 and Doctorate of Optometry (O.D.) in 2021 from the Michigan College of Optometry in Big Rapids, Michigan. Dr. Birsching completed clinical internships in the low vision and contact lens department of Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, the Northern Indiana Healthcare System in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, and the Eye Clinic of Wisconsin in Wausau.

Dr. Birsching practiced in private practices in Central and Northern Wisconsin prior to joining the Eye Clinic of Wisconsin in 2022. He has a special interest in prescribing customized optical devices ranging from specialty contact lenses to individualized low vision aids. Dr. Birsching believes that in addition to managing the health of the eyes, it is important to provide the best quality of vision possible to promote better functional independence and quality of life.

Jennifer N. D’Acquisto, O.D.

Dr. D’Acquisto graduated from Ripon College in 2008 with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology and a Chemistry minor.  She attended the University of Missouri, St. Louis College of Optometry, and earned her Doctor of Optometry (O.D.) there in 2012.

In 2011, Dr. D’Acquisto served as the President of the American Optometric Student Association, UMSL chapter. She has volunteered with VOSH (Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity) in Honduras, performing eye exams for Hondurans in need.

Dr. D’Acquisto previously worked at Norton Sound Health Corporation in Northwestern Alaska, providing care to the rural population in numerous villages, before joining the Eye Clinic of Wisconsin in 2018.

After growing up in Wausau and attending the Newman Catholic Schools, Dr. Kirk graduated from Marquette University Summa Cum Laude with her Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences. She then obtained her Doctor of Optometry (O.D.) with the Highest Distinction from the Michigan College of Optometry at Ferris State University in Big Rapids, MI. After passing all three parts of her National Boards Examinations, Dr. Kirk completed her externship rotations at the Michigan College of Optometry, the Wyoming VA Medical Center, and the Eye Clinic of Wisconsin. Her externship training offered Dr. Kirk hands-on experience in treating ocular disease, pediatric and binocular vision disorders, surgical co-management, specialty contact lens fitting, and primary eye care. 

After completing her training, Dr. Kirk was happy to return home and practice in Central Wisconsin prior to joining the Eye Clinic of Wisconsin in 2024.

A native of Central Wisconsin, Dr. Michalski graduated from University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in 2005 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. She obtained a Bachelor of Science in Visual Science (BSVS) in 2006, and earned her  Doctor of Optometry (O.D.) in 2009 from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry in Philadelphia, PA.

Dr. Michalski interned at the VA in Charleston, SC, and Denver, CO. She also worked at the Marshfield Clinic before joining the Retina Team here at the Eye Clinic of Wisconsin in 2016.

Dr. Fish received her BS and MS degrees from UW Stevens Point. In 2012, she received her doctorate in Audiology from A.T. Still University in Arizona.

Dr. Fish previously practiced at Fort Healthcare Audiology in Ft. Atkinson, Wisconsin. A native of Stevens Point, she returned to Central Wisconsin in 2014 and joined the Eye Clinic of Wisconsin as the Hearing Center’s Audiologist.
