David G. Carli, D.O.

Cornea and External Disease
Refractive SurgeryDr. Carli grew up in Northeast Wisconsin. For his undergraduate education he attended Michigan Technological University in Houghton, MI where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering. He then received his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Des Moines University in Des Moines, IA in 2019 and then traveled to upstate New York to start his specialty training. He completed both his internship and ophthalmology residency at the State University of New York at Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, NY in 2023. After residency, he completed a fellowship in Cornea, External Disease and Refractive Surgery at Price Vision Group in Indianapolis, IN in 2024.
Dr. Carli is excited to return to Wisconsin to practice. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his family and exploring the great outdoors.
Dr. Carli joined the Eye Clinic of Wisconsin in 2024.

Douglas T. Edwards, M.D.
Board Certified Ophthalmologist

Refractive SurgeryDr. Edwards received his Bachelor of Arts at Wartburg College in Waverly, IA in 1995. He earned his M.D. from the University of Iowa Medical School in Iowa City, IA, in 1999 and finished his internship at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, WI, the following year. He completed his Ophthalmology Residency at the Mayo Clinic Department of Ophthalmology in Rochester, MN, 2003.
In addition to scoring in the top 3% on his board exams, Dr. Edwards has performed thousands of eye surgeries and has certifications with the VISX laser, Intralase, and custom LASIK procedure, as well as being Board Certified and a member of AAO and ISRS. Dr. Edwards joined the clinic in 2003.

John A. Flatter, M.D.

Cataract SurgeryDr. Flatter graduated from the University of California in 2009 with a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry/Molecular Biology. He went on to earn his medical degree in 2015 from the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, and while there served as the Vice President of the American College of Physicians, Student Chapter.
Dr. Flatter completed his internship at the Medical College of Wisconsin affiliated hospital, St. Joseph’s in Milwaukee, and his ophthalmology residency at Penn State Eye Center in Hershey, Pennsylvania. He has served with World Blindness Outreach in the Dominican Republic, providing care for cataract and corneal transplant patients.
Dr. Flatter joined the Eye Clinic of Wisconsin in 2019.

Luis Ferdinand M. Galang, D.O.
Board Certified Ophthalmologist
Comprehensive OphthalmologyDr. Galang received his Bachelor of Science in business administration from the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 1990. He earned his Doctorate of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) from Des Moines University Osteopathic Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa, in 2000 and finished his internship at Michigan State University’s POH Medical Center in Pontiac, Michigan, the following year.
He completed his Ophthalmology Residency at the Detroit Osteopathic Ophthalmology Consortium in Pontiac, Michigan, 2004. Dr. Galang finished his fellowship in ophthalmic and facial plastic surgery at Consultants in Ophthalmic & Facial Plastic Surgery in Southfield, Michigan, in 2005.
Dr. Galang practiced in Troy, MI, before joining the clinic in 2007.

Christiana L. Gandy, M.D.
Board Certified Ophthalmologist
Glaucoma & Comprehensive OphthalmologyDr. Gandy received her Bachelor degree in Music from Southeastern Louisiana University in 2007. Before attending medical school, she earned a Master and a Doctorate degree in piano performance from the University of Maryland. She then pursued her Doctor of Medicine degree at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore, graduating in 2017. The following year, she completed an internship at MedStar Harbor Hospital in Baltimore. She then completed her ophthalmology residency at New York Presbyterian Hospital – Weill Cornell Medical College in 2021, followed by Glaucoma Fellowship at the Duke Eye Center of Duke University in 2022.
Dr. Gandy will join the Eye Clinic of Wisconsin in 2022.

Matthew G. Hattenhauer, M.D.
Board Certified Ophthalmologist
Glaucoma & Comprehensive OphthalmologyDr. Hattenhauer received his Bachelor of Science from St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota, in 1987. He earned his M.D. from the University of Wisconsin, at Madison in 1992 and then completed a transitional year at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He finished his Ophthalmology Residency at the Mayo Clinic Department of Ophthalmology in Rochester, Minnesota, in 1996. He remained there for his glaucoma fellowship, which he completed in 1997.
Dr. Hattenhauer was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, before joining the clinic in 1999. Dr. Hattenhauer retired in June 2023.

Christopher J. Kucharski, M.D.
Board Certified Ophthalmologist
Comprehensive Ophthalmology & GlaucomaDr. Kucharski received his undergraduate degree in biology from Franciscan University of Steubenville, Ohio, in 2000. He went on to earn his medical degree from Loyola University’s Stritch School of Medicine in Maywood, Illinois, and completed his internship in the Indiana University School of Medicine’s Department of Surgery.
Dr. Kucharski completed his ophthalmology residency at Indiana University School of Medicine’s Department of Ophthalmology before he went on to his Glaucoma Fellowship in the University of Wisconsin’s Department of Visual Sciences.
Dr. Kucharski joined the Eye Clinic of Wisconsin in 2010.

Afua A. Shin, M.D.
Board Certified Ophthalmologist
Cornea and External Disease
Refractive SurgeryDr. Shin received her undergraduate degree in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology from Yale University, New Haven, CT, in 2009. From 2009-2010, she led an independent research project at the Tokyo Ariake University of Medical and Health Sciences in Tokyo, Japan. She earned her medical degree from Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine in St. Louis, MO, in 2014.
The following year, Dr. Shin finished her internship at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, IL, and went on to complete her ophthalmology residency there in 2018.
Dr. Shin completed a fellowship in Cornea and External Diseases at the University of California Davis in July of 2019.
Dr. Shin joined the Eye Clinic of Wisconsin in 2019.
