Mathew W. Aschbrenner, M.D.

Diseases & Surgery of the Retina & VitreousDr. Aschbrenner earned his medical degree from UWSMPH in Madison, WI in 2006. He completed his internship at Marshfield Clinic in Marshfield, WI before going to the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill to complete his ophthalmology residency. Dr. Aschbrenner completed his Vitreo-Retinal Disease Fellowship at Barnes Retina Institute/Washington University in Saint Louis, MO in 2012.
Dr. Aschbrenner joined the Eye Clinic of Wisconsin in 2012.

Deepak Sambhara, MD, FASRS

Medical Director of Research
Medical Retina and Diseases of the VitreousDr. Sambhara received a Bachelor of Arts in Biological Basis of Behavior at the University of Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia, PA in 2008. He then earned his M.D from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in 2014. Dr. Sambhara subsequently completed an internship at Banner University Medical Center in Phoenix, AZ the following year. He finished his Ophthalmology residency at the Penn State Eye Center in Hershey, PA in 2018.
After residency, Dr. Sambhara spent an additional year of training at Duke Eye Center in Durham, NC, where he completed a fellowship in medical retina and diseases of the vitreous cavity. There, he was trained in cutting edge angiographic techniques for diagnosing and managing retinal vascular diseases, and was exposed to novel drug design research for Age Related Macular Degeneration. In 2019, he joined the Eye Clinic of Wisconsin as a retina specialist.
In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Sambhara is the founder and Medical Director of Research for the Eye Clinic’s clinical trial program, where he is the active principal investigator for several global trials for new treatments and technologies for retinal diseases. The retina research department is the first of its kind in the state of Wisconsin.
Dr. Sambhara has received prestigious grants from AAO, research funding, and travel grants to present at many national meetings, including AAO, ASRS, and ARVO. He has over a dozen publications in peer-reviewed journals, sits on the board of directors for the Wisconsin Academy of Ophthalmology, and is an active member of AAO, VBS, and ARVO, and is a fellow of ASRS. In addition, he serves as an oral-board examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmology where he helps ensure the highest standards for the next generation of graduating ophthalmologists.

Maxwell J. Wingelaar, M.D.
Board Certified Ophthalmologist
Diseases & Surgery of the Retina & VitreousDr. Wingelaar grew up on the west side of Michigan along the lakeshore. His undergraduate degree was in Biomedical Sciences from Grand Valley State University in Allendale, MI. He earned his medical degree from Michigan State University College of Human Medicine in 2017. He then completed his internship at Beaumont Hospital in Taylor, MI. From there he went on to complete his ophthalmology residency in 2021 at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics in Madison WI, where he served as chief resident. Following residency, he completed a fellowship in Vitreoretinal Surgery at The Retina Institute in St. Louis, MO in 2023.
Dr. Wingelaar is an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Retina Specialists. He is a Board-Certified Ophthalmologist.
Dr. Wingelaar joined the Eye Clinic of Wisconsin in 2023.
